Homestay is basically the owner staying at his/her premises lets out rooms commercially, up to a maximum of 7 rooms of the premises, for accommodation business. GST is exempted from the room rent offered. The government also promotes homestays during large events like the Olympics or other sports events. Homestay may not work out if the requirement is of a large inventory of rooms, say for a wedding or during any corporate conference or training event. Also, if the guest needs complete privacy as an independent house, Homestay is not a good idea.
